Project Description

The Department of Veterans Affairs is trying to expand its services to a growing number of veterans in the state of Utah. Big-D Construction teamed with Architectural Nexus for the three-story, 39,800-square-foot, design-build office building, which includes a daylight basement. The building, which uses steel columns and braced frame supports, has a brick and EIFS exterior skin that matches the existing campus buildings.

Designed and constructed to be ADA-compliant, the VA Outpatient Mental Health Clinic includes corridors wide enough for two wheelchairs side-by-side, automatic lobby doors, and entrance ramps. Big-D installed a glycol snow-melt system in the surface of the main entrance that eliminates snow and ice accumulation, providing a safer path into the building. To maximize security at the clinic, several areas include card-activated locks to offices, counseling rooms, and corridor doors leading out of the lobby.

To maximize daylight on the lower level, the layout relies on open cubicle space, with a combination of 95 offices and consultation rooms located around the perimeter of the level. An exam room, treatment room, and large group-therapy rooms are located near the center. The VA Outpatient Mental Health Clinic also includes break rooms, a lobby waiting area, and communication center.

Although not LEED registered, the building was designed and constructed using the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED scorecard as reference for creating an environmentally friendly facility. We used high-recycled-content structural steel for construction and indigenous plants for landscaping. Big-D also performed utility work on the site, including fiber optic, power, central plant steam, and central plant chilled water.
