Big-D Construction served as Construction Manager and General Contractor for Slim-Fast Foods’ 450,000-square-foot western manufacturing plant and distribution center. Located in Tucson, Arizona, this was the second Slim-Fast Foods Company plant in the world.
Work on the 85-acre site included grading, preservation and relocation of native plants, on-site and off-site utilities, roadways, hiking trails, perimeter fencing and a process wastewater equalization system.
The Slim-Fast Foods Company processing plant included an ammonia refrigeration room, a boiler room, bulk receiving, product processing, filling and packaging, warehousing, administration and training areas. A mezzanine area, located above the plant processing and packaging area, provides ample access space for installation and maintenance of mechanical and electrical equipment, piping and storage.
The cafeteria and corridors feature ground-face concrete masonry units, underscoring the natural beauty of stone aggregates in the concrete. Interior work consisted of food grade finishes in all process areas, shrinkage compensation floors with minimal joints in warehouse/distribution areas and technology unique in the product processing industry. The building’s exterior was painted with southwestern earth tones in keeping with Tucson’s desert surroundings.
