Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) is Utah’s largest community college, serving the diverse needs of tens of thousands of students on three different campuses. Keeping pace with technology is a priority for the college, and Big-D is helping it meet that need with the 181,117-square-foot, $39.7 million Center for New Media (CFNM) project. The CFNM will help SLCC respond to industry needs and prepare students in the fields of Digital Design, Communication Technology, Broadcasting, Entertainment Arts, Film, Web Design, Animation, and Music Innovation. The renovation effort included the Career and Technical Education (CTE) building and the Annex Building as well as the CFNM building. The project is LEED registered with a certification goal of Gold.
CENTER FOR NEW MEDIA BUILDING
For the CFNM project, Big-D renovated and made seismic upgrades to approximately 108,000 square feet of the building, including the existing natatorium, gymnasium, library, entry vestibules, and corridors. We also completed 17,250 square feet of new construction that added 43 laboratories to serve 7,000 new students by offering instruction and training in digital design, applied technology, broadcasting and animation. The seismic upgrades included adding concrete shear walls in select locations, steel plating on the roof for a seismic diaphragm, and 75-foot-deep micropiles at 132 locations.
The CTE building is used by Salt Lake School District’s CTE program and shares some of the common spaces with Salt Lake Community College. In order to make room for the new 35,000-square-foot addition, the existing cafeteria and all associated site work and utility structures had to be demolished. The two-level CTE building includes, on the first level, several classrooms, commons areas, a reception area, a conference room, a break room, private offices, support rooms, restrooms, and elevators. The second level features classrooms, computer labs, private offices, open office area, restrooms, and storage rooms.
Big-D constructed the new single-story 20,867-square-foot Annex Building concurrently with the CTE building. The Annex Building was constructed on a previously developed site. It includes storage areas, a shop, a rehearsal room, restrooms, a break room/conference room, a tool storage room, several shops, and ten private offices.
