A tilt-up warehouse for Sears, large enough to accommodate 16 football fields
- Leed Silver
Big-D Construction performed as the prime contractor on this 780,000-sqaure-foot, tilt-up warehouse for Sears (private industry). The new Sears warehouse building is large enough to accommodate 16 football fields. Sears Holdings Corp., the nation’s fifth largest broad line retailer, with approximately 3,900 full-line and specialty retail stores in the United States and Canada, has been a household name for generations. When Sears decided to build a LEED Silver facility in Stockton, California, they turned to Big-D Construction to build it.
The project included unique architectural elements including a suspended trellis canopy, bold entry articulation and consistent architectural treatment—paint, panel massing, clerestory windows—across the entire facade to bring a level of quality not typically seen in a large distribution facility. This distribution center included 120 inbound/outbound truck door loading docks, an automated battery charging system and 46 acres of site development. The Sears facility has a total of 14,000 square feet of office space, consisting of 12,000 square feet in the main office and approximately 1,000 square feet of office space in each of the two satellite offices in the warehouse.
The office area included cubicle workstations with reconfigurable walls and partitions, a large break room, a training room and conference room with audio-visual conferencing capabilities, private offices for managers/staff, an IT room, a security room, an interview room, a truckers’ lounge and an equipment locker area containing over 50 individual lockers. The warehouse included a panelized-wood roof-framing system covered with an ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (EPDM) single-ply membrane. This project required performance of multiple disciplines including long-span steel-framed construction, concrete spread footing foundations, equipment platforms, support areas, roofing, electrical, fire protection, paving, mechanical, utilities, grading, sheetrock, painting, steel, HVAC and landscaping.
