- LEED Gold
A company named Crate & Barrel probably knows a thing or two about storage. In 2008, the retail housewares, furniture, and home accessories giant needed to accommodate its growing business and improve efficiencies by consolidating three Northern California distribution facilities that it had outgrown. ProLogis Development Services in Tracy, CA, was ready to help, and they selected Big-D to construct two facilities that Crate & Barrel would rent.
The two new Crate & Barrel facilities, which employ approximately 125 people, were built according to guidelines established by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) and achieved LEED Gold certification, becoming the largest distribution center in the United States to achieve this prestigious designation. Both buildings incorporated a number of sustainable design and construction techniques, including extensive use of recycled and locally sourced construction materials and the installation of an energy-efficient fluorescent lighting system
The larger building (approximately 827,280 square feet) stores furniture products. It has 178 dock doors, including three drive-in doors. The smaller building (more than 398,400 square feet) is a distribution center for housewares products and direct fulfillment orders with 76 dock doors and two drive-in doors. Together, the Crate & Barrel facilities serve 13 states and 29 retail stores located throughout the western United States, delivering great storage and more to the masses.
