Project Description

When Janicki Industries, a high-precision tooling company, needed a new plant to support its work on the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program, its partner, JL Properties, called on Big-D Construction to perform a fast-track design-build project. We completed the 104,000-square-foot build-to-suit facility in twelve short months.

The new Janicki East Gate Manufacturing Facility is a composite manufacturing plant/office that includes two 30-foot long Janicki 5-axis mills. The construction team installed approximately 8,000 cubic yards of structural concrete gantries and beams used to support a 20-ton milling machine, which had to have perfect alignment with three mills. To maintain floor integrity, the team used perimeter casting slabs outside the building footprint and put the floor in after the tilts were stood and the roof was installed. Approaches like these allowed Big-D to complete this complex project on time and on budget, not only meeting but exceeding the expectations of the owner.

Big-D accommodated changes that arose during construction. As Janicki put one of its 5-axis mills into operation, they contracted our team to immediately commence construction on a third 90-foot-long 5-axis mill. We undertook construction while the facility maintained operation in the same bay, with only temporary partitions separating the operating mill from our work site. Throughout the process Big-D kept safety the highest priority and incurred “Zero Lost Time Injury Accidents” on the project.

In order to meet their contractual agreements to accommodate their key role with the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program, Janicki had to pass certification and start its fit-up and commissioning process in January. Janicki passed the required vendor certifications on the first attempt, which was unprecedented, and speaks highly to the quality construction practices Big-D provided.
