The temple will serve as a place of worship for the more than 30,000 active Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints members living in the Tucson area.

Project Description

In 2012, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced plans to build the first Temple in Tucson, Arizona. The temple will serve as a place of worship for the more than 30,000 active Latter-day Saints living in the Tucson area. The Tucson Arizona Temple will be the sixth temple built in Arizona. President Dieter Uchtodorf, the second counselor of the First Presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, says the temple is for people who are members of the church and who are not members of the church.

Big-D Construction is building this new temple on a 7-acre site in the Catalina Foothills. The mission-style design will be similar to the temple in Tijuana, Mexico. The two-story, 34,000 square-foot-space temple features a cupola with a peak of about 27 feet above the base and platform. The dome-shaped cupola will resemble the famous dome that crowns the Florence Cathedral in Italy.

Construction is expected to be complete in 2017.
