Located in the heart of Downtown Salt Lake City, Utah, the John W. Gallivan Center is an urban plaza that provides a variety of year-round entertainment. Visitors enjoy free concerts at the amphitheater in the summer, ice skating in the winter, and weekday lunch and concerts near the pond. The Gallivan Center also hosts festivals and private events, including weddings, all year long. The adjacent Utah Transit Authority (UTA) TRAX light rail station increases access and foot traffic.
In 2010 the plaza’s owners turned to Big-D to undertake a much-needed remodeling effort. Although the plaza is bordered by daily downtown traffic, the One Utah Center office high-rise, and the Marriott City Center Hotel, Big-D successfully completed the renovation of this iconic landmark without disrupting surrounding activities.
The renovation consisted of removal and relocation of the pond and ice rink, a reconfiguration of the plaza, and new piping and chillers, which we moved to a remote site in the existing parking structure, three levels underground. The project also included a new two-story building for restrooms, concession areas, ticketing, ice skate rentals, and plaza security. The center also boasts a promenade, banquet room, and a bride-and-groom room for weddings and events. Demolition of the existing amphitheater made way for the reconstruction of a larger amphitheater which is home to many concerts once again.
