Project Description

The Freedman Meats plant includes facilities for beef processing (13,321 sq ft); poultry processing (9,177 sq ft); seafood and shellfish processing (13,167 sq ft); prepared foods (6,630 sq ft); cold storage and freezer (36,613 sq ft); warehouse and distribution; and office and administration space with a culinary display kitchen, locker rooms, and employee welfare facilities.

The warehouse production area has a 27-foot clear height. The production areas, view corridors, and access areas use “box-in-box” cooler construction with a 15-foot clear height insulated metal panel ceiling. The remaining areas use the full height of the structure with the facility envelope acting as the freezer/cooler insulation systems, complete with vapor barrier. The dry warehouse has a false ceiling installed to maintain the 30-foot maximum deck height for the ESFR sprinkler systems.

Production areas are cooled, conditioned and dehumidified with massive hygienic units. These areas are designed to be shut down daily for a six-hour window that will allow for a four-hour complete chemical/140-degree hot water wash-down, and then a two-hour process to dehumidify and re-establish the operating temperatures.

The 14-acre site includes employee and visitor parking, truck parking, and landscaping. The extensive site utilities include several unique systems, such as a 55,000-gallon water storage break tank that allows the fire sprinkler system to run without draining water from the surrounding water lines; utilities also include five different grease interceptors.
