Project Description

Sometimes a building project revolves around one specific, essential constraint. In the case of Big-D Construction’s work on a distribution warehouse for Cabela’s, the world’s largest direct marketer of hunting, fishing, camping, and related outdoor merchandise, the constraint was the incredibly technical materials handling equipment (MHE) the owner had ordered. The equipment would be installed by a third party, DCI Integration, and Big-D had to manage the schedule with precision and detail to accommodate its installation.

The technical installation of the materials handling equipment wasn’t the only challenge. The other challenge was the aggressive schedule to construct the 603,030 square foot, state-of-the-art distribution center in Tooele, Utah. To meet the deadline for the MHE installation, the parties involved (design team, Big-D, DCI Integration, Cabela’s, and Tooele City) worked closely to coordinate the jurisdictional entitlement phase along with critical life safety, structural, electrical, fire sprinkler, and lighting requirements for the building and the controlling MHE components. Big-D completed half of the structure in just under six months (including winter months) to allow DCI to start the MHE installation. As a result of our preconstruction services, combined with our expertise regarding distribution facilities, Big-D saved the owner approximately $1.1 million.

The principal warehouse is approximately 554,370 square feet with a clear height of 30 feet. The MHE occupies several large automated equipment platforms with multiple mezzanines from which it accesses product on high-pile, narrow-aisle racking. Additional spaces include a maintenance shop, shipping and receiving areas, and a 30,000-square-foot single-story administration office

The concrete tilt-up structure has open web-steel roof joists, girders, and metal deck. The warehouse colors complement the outdoor retailer’s culture and brand, including gabled roof entry elements that identify the public and staff entry points.

Big-D also performed the entire site development, including parking facilities, on 45 acres of the site. We worked with the developer during construction to coordinate the improvements of the off-site roads and street lighting, which helped provide early access to the building for the MHE contractor.

The state-of-the-art facility processes freight and delivers products to Cabela’s consumers and retail facilities throughout the United States, primarily serving the Western region. This is the first fully automated distribution facility in Cabela’s history. Once construction was complete on the distribution center, Big-D crews focused on constructing Cabela’s brand new store in Farmington, Utah.
