The new residential building will total 397,657 square feet and have 258 market-rate apartments, as well as 13 townhouses.
In 2014, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints unveiled plans for a 32-story apartment tower at 1601 Vine Street in Philadelphia. The new residential building, named The Alexander, will total 397,657 square feet and have 258 market-rate apartments, as well as 13 townhouses. About 12,000 square feet of the development will be dedicated to street-level retail. A 105,252 square foot 2-level below-grade parking structure will be available for residents of the apartment tower. Residential amenities will also include a swimming pool, fitness center, club room and business center.
The residential tower is one of three buildings that Big-D Construction is working on along Vine Street in Pennsylvania. Big-D crews are also building a 24,000 square foot church meeting house west of the apartment tower. The 2-story meeting house will have a chapel, family history and cultural center and an outdoor courtyard. The meeting house will serve as a Stake Center for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Philadelphia. The new meeting house will stand across the street from the new Philadelphia Pennsylvania Temple. Plans for the temple were announced by the church in 2008 and in 2016, Big-D finished construction on the new temple.
The design of both the residential building and the meetinghouse will be consistent with the brick-and-masonry Georgian and Federal architecture. Red brick will be used for the meeting house and buff brick will be used for the residential tower. Historic-styled street lights, brick and blue stone will be used in the landscaping.
BLT Architects of Philadelphia and Robert A. M. Stern Architects of New York designed the project which will be complete in 2017.
