Big-D Construction Completes Foundation Upgrades to Historic Salt Lake City & County Building

Big-D Construction is pleased to announce that work on the Seismic Foundation Upgrade on the iconic Salt Lake City & County Building is complete. In just 8 months, Big-D removed more than 706 tons of existing Red Butte Foundation Stone from the historic building. The stone was originally installed when the building was constructed in the 1890s. Big-D delicately replaced the old stone foundations using 16 tons of new, reinforcing steel; 285 cubic yards of concrete; hundreds of concrete drilled and epoxy inserts; several new and large structural steel members.

The Salt Lake City & County Building is home to the offices for the elected leaders of Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County. The Seismic Foundation Upgrade had to be performed without disrupting employees and guests. Big-D mitigated noise during working hours by using the old “Wedge-and-Feather Method” of stone removal, instead of traditional jack hammers and other tools. This unique method allowed crews to perform work during business hours without disrupting operations at the City & County Building.

Big-D is proud to report that 14,400 man hours were performed on this project with no time loss or injuries recorded during construction. Thanks to the efforts of VCBO Architecture, Reaveley Engineers, and the SLCCB Engineering and Facilities Group for helping Big-D to deliver the project on time and under budget.
